I met with them 6 times over the course of 6 weeks. Their consistent concern was that I didn't really want a job at that level of responsibility/pay, and would quit as soon as something higher paying came along. Another company I interviewed with made me an offer, and I told JD I was going to accept if they didn't offer. There were a couple days of intensive back and forth of offers/counter offers. I felt bad as I was unintentionally putting both sides through the ringer. My main contact was the COO looking to fill this position so he could retire, as IT was under him and the other executives knew nothing about it (he absorbed the management responsibilities when the previous guy left). I eventually accepted JD, with a starting date out 2.5 weeks. I even did the new employee paperwork and some onboarding. On a Wednesday 3 days before my Monday start date, my last employer (NCF) contacted me for the first time. Interviewed that day with CSO. Thursday interviewed with my boss, CFO. Friday 8:00 AM onsite interview with whole team. They offer me around 1:00 PM that afternoon. Some back and forth negotiations over a couple of hours. On Friday at 4:55 PM I inform JD I accepted another job and would not be starting Monday morning. COOs retirement canceled. This after I spent 6 weeks soothing their concerns and convincing them I was a lifer if they hired me. They would be justified being salty about my candidacy.
